Two engaging online sessions designed to give you practical knowledge about how pets support children's emotional and social development. Each session combines research findings with real-world examples.
Our webinar series consists of two online sessions, each lasting between 60 and 75 minutes. Both sessions are designed for parents, caregivers, educators, and anyone interested in understanding the relationship between pets and childhood development.
Both sessions are held entirely online, allowing you to participate from the comfort of your home. All you need is a stable internet connection and a device with a browser.
Each session is structured to fit comfortably within an evening schedule. Presentations are followed by a question-and-answer segment where participants can interact directly with the speaker.
Both sessions will be recorded and made available to registered participants. If you cannot attend in real time, you can watch the recordings at your convenience within 30 days.
The first session lays the groundwork for understanding why the bond between children and pets matters so much for healthy development. The invited expert will walk participants through the psychological mechanisms that underpin empathy growth in young children and explain how everyday interactions with animals activate those mechanisms. This session is ideal for anyone new to the topic, as well as those with some background who want a structured, research-informed perspective.
Participants will leave this session with a clear understanding of the foundational concepts behind pet-assisted child development and a set of initial strategies they can begin applying at home or in educational settings right away.
Explore how daily contact with animals helps children recognize, interpret, and respond to the emotional states of other living beings. You will learn about specific behavioral cues that children pick up from pets and how these translate into stronger interpersonal empathy. Research from the AnthrozoΓΆs Journal and Frontiers in Psychology will be discussed, highlighting controlled studies where children who cared for pets showed measurable increases in empathic concern and perspective-taking compared to control groups.
Discover age-appropriate pet care tasks that give children a genuine sense of accountability without overwhelming them. The session covers feeding schedules, grooming routines, and walking responsibilities, along with frameworks for gradually increasing task complexity as children mature. You will see how consistent pet care routines correlate with improved self-regulation, time management, and follow-through in other areas of a child's life, based on findings from the Journal of Applied Developmental Psychology.
Learn practical exercises that parents and educators can use to structure interactions between children and pets. These activities range from observation games, where children watch and describe their pet's mood, to gentle grooming sessions that teach patience and care. Each activity has clear instructions, expected outcomes, and tips for adapting the exercise to different age groups, from toddlers to pre-teens. The goal is to make every interaction intentional and developmentally valuable.
Review real-world examples where families and schools have integrated pet care into children's routines with positive developmental results. These case studies, drawn from published research and anonymized field observations, illustrate both the benefits and the challenges of pet-assisted learning. You will see how different family structures and pet types (dogs, cats, rabbits, and small animals) each create unique learning opportunities for children of varying ages and temperaments.
The second session builds directly on the concepts introduced in Session 1 and shifts the focus toward actionable techniques. While the first session establishes the "why," this session answers the "how." The invited expert will demonstrate specific exercises, walk through documented case studies, and facilitate a participant-driven discussion where attendees can share experiences and ask targeted questions.
By the end of this session, participants will have a complete toolkit of practical strategies, along with the confidence to implement them in their own families or educational programs. The interactive format ensures that every attendee can get personalized guidance.
Receive detailed, step-by-step instructions for exercises that pair children with pets in purposeful ways. These are not generic suggestions but carefully designed activities that target specific developmental outcomes. For example, a "mood diary" exercise teaches children to observe and document their pet's behavior daily, building both literacy skills and emotional awareness simultaneously. Another exercise focuses on cooperative feeding routines where siblings or classmates must work together, reinforcing teamwork and communication.
Understand the connection between pet interaction and the development of core social-emotional competencies such as self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision-making. The expert will explain how each structured exercise maps to these competencies and provide indicators that parents and educators can use to track a child's progress over weeks and months. This section draws from the International Journal of Early Childhood Education and practical classroom observations.
Hear about documented success stories from families and schools that have implemented pet-assisted learning programs. Each story covers the starting conditions, the specific strategies used, the challenges encountered, and the outcomes achieved. The expert will also discuss situations where initial approaches did not work as expected and what adjustments were made, providing a balanced and honest picture that prepares participants for realistic implementation in their own environments.
The final portion of Session 2 is dedicated to open discussion. Participants can share their own experiences with pets and children, ask specific questions about situations they face at home or in the classroom, and receive tailored guidance from the expert. This collaborative format has consistently proven to be one of the most valued parts of our webinar series, as it allows for the exchange of ideas between attendees from diverse backgrounds and family structures.
